  15. The Read Only Memory (ROM) chips
  16. hold information that has been built
  17. into them.  The RAM chips can
  18. remember what you tell them.  But
  19. the only thing these two kinds of
  20. chips can remember are "on" and
  21. "off".
  22.    The memory chips are divided into
  23. thousands of little compartments
  24. called bits.  Each bit is either
  25. "on" or "off."  The bits are grouped
  26. together in eights.
  27.    Each group of eight bits is
  28. called a byte.
  29.     There are 256 possible
  30. combinations of "on" or "off" in a
  31. group of eight.  You can see how you
